Firsttip, give your florist a general idea of the style and color scheme you aregoing for. Tell her which flowers that are an absolute no, but generally allowthem flexibility so they can use what is in season and cheapest. There are sometimes when peonies cost a fortune, and other times when they are so cheap youcan fill your hall with them. Make sure this flexibility will be reflected inyour final price tag.

Questions to ask a wedding venue before booking them

When brides and grooms start looking for wedding venues, too often they fall in love with the beauty of the place and sign a contract before they've considered the more practical things. It makes sense -- who wants to look back and say only, "Well, it was practical"?

But unless the place is so magical that you're willing to plan your whole event around it, your shouldn't choose between wedding venues until you've decided approximately how many guests you're inviting and the size of your budget. You'll also need to decide if you want to have your ceremony and reception in the same place, or if you want an all-in-one wedding venue.

Once you know these things, and you have a few wedding venues in mind that fit that budget and size, then it's time to start asking questions!

What's the decor like? Does it fit your style and wedding colors? Will you have to spend a lot of money on flowers and decorations to make it beautiful?
Do they have an in-house caterer, and do you like that food? (While an in-house caterer can be easier and cheaper, sometimes the food is not as beautiful as the room. So make sure you taste it!) Do they have a limitation on which outside caterers you can use?
Do they have adequate coat check and bathroom facilities?
Is the wedding venue wheelchair accessible? If not, are there many stairs to climb? How close is the parking to the ceremony and reception rooms?
What's the cancellation policy?
Is there a payment schedule? What kind of deposits are required?
Are there any hidden costs? (Before you sign the contract, read it carefully.)
What are the overtime charges?
Do they have a liquor license?
Will they allow you to bring your own liquor? (This is usually cheaper, even with the customary corkage fee.)
Is there room in the wedding venue for a band and/or dancing?
Does the wedding venue already own a sound system with adequate speakers or will that need to be rented?
Is there a space for the bride and groom to change and/or relax?
Where will you take photographs? Is there a park nearby, or do the coordinators have recommended spots on the grounds?
Who will be supervising and troubleshooting before the day of your wedding? Who will be supervising and troubleshooting on the day of your wedding? Can you meet them now?
Where can your guests park? Are there extra fees for parking? Do they have valet parking?
Is the wedding venue convenient to public transportation, especially in big cities? How long will it take your guests to get there?
Especially in museums or private clubs, are there limitations on decorations? Do they limit food and drinks to only certain areas of the wedding venue?
Are candles or other open flames allowed?
If its an outdoor location, do they have any backup plans for rain or other inclement weather? If not, is there a place that you can put up a tent?

Yes, there's an update to wedding etiquette. Check out these techie laws to abide by while planning your wedding.

Do: Use Facebook to share pics from prewedding parties...and, later, wedding photos!

Don't: Don't skip sending traditional wedding invites. It's a formal event (yes, even if it's in your backyard), so treat it that way.

Do: Read blogs, online forums and review sites (go to WeddingChannel.com vendor reviews) to get real brides' opinions of potential vendors and to write reviews of your favorites after the wedding.

Don't: Don't bash your vendors on review sites! Give kudos when deserved, and remember that your vendors are human. A thoughtful and honest review is the way to go.

Do: Use social media (like foursquare or Facebook) for checking in during your planning (at the cake bakery or floral studio). You could even score a discount along the way!

Don't: Don't let this serve as a trail for those who aren't invited on the dress shopping trip. Cousin sally might be upset when she sees you've "checked in: to the bridal salon and she didn't get an invite. Don't publish a check-in to your feed.

We continue to follow Sara and Jon as they plan their wedding:

"We went to Charlotte's Weddings and Bella Victoria Boutique to dress shop. I found them in the Portland Wedding Workbook....both are awesome dress shops...and I found my dress!

What did I learn about buying a wedding dress? It’s very complicated, but it can also be quite entertaining! I thought I found that I had already found a dress a few weeks ago that in my mind “would do the job”. It was pretty, flattering, but it lacked any “WOW” factor for me. I even put a down payment on it. It was rather nice to go dress shopping again, however, knowing that if I didn’t find anything better, I still had a dress to use for my wedding.

Where did I go wrong? I was nervous and I settled.

I mean, I’ve watched “Say Yes to the Dress.” I know that you want to look gorgeous and the dress is one of your most difficult decisions. But until I tried on my personal perfect wedding dress, I didn’t quite understand that it is extremely important that you find a dress that is exactly what you want…as a bride, your dress needs to “WOW” you!

When I was finally wearing my perfect dress, (thank you Portland Wedding Workbook for suggesting such excellent dress shops) everyone in the room held their breath, including me. I could only smile, mom cried, and my sister and friends just kept saying how beautiful it was…it was the one!

I used the worksheet on page 9 of my Portland Wedding Workbook to help me choose my wedding dress. It was very helpful while we shopped because I was able to write down the designers I liked, the style of dress and details I wanted, as well as shoe and accessory ideas.

I especially found useful the “Tips to Remember” section next to the worksheet. It gives you suggestions to make your shopping experience more successful, such as taking pictures of dresses you like, wearing nude colored undergarments, bringing people you trust along with you, and setting your budget BEFORE walking into the bridal shop.

Also, on page 7, there is a fabulous little section called “Dressing Your Body Type.” It’s an editorial that lists the different kind of styles that flatter a variety of female shapes. It was super helpful because my instinct was to try on dresses that I thought were pretty but didn’t necessarily flatter me.

Here are a few of those “tips” I found very helpful while I was trying dresses on. I only realized they’d be issues after beginning to fill out the worksheet in my book, but fortunately before we set out on my wedding dress excursion:

1) It’s okay if you’re a couple sizes bigger in a wedding dress than in your jeans. Most women are!
2) A dress will very likely require tailoring to fit your shape perfectly. The other wonderful thing is that a tailor is able to make any number of changes to your dress. For instance, I’m having cap sleeves added to my dress because I prefer sleeves and it gives my dress a more vintage-y feel.
3) Make sure to keep your friends and family close. This is a requirement! You NEED people to honestly critique how the dress looks and if it matches your theme. You want to look your best and if you feel beautiful, your pictures will be gorgeous and you will have a happy memory of your perfect dress at your fairy tale wedding!

We had a photographer snap a few shots of our adventure and I was SOO happy when I looked at the pictures after!

Dressing your Body Type!

If You're Pear-Shaped:Look for a skirt that gradually flares out in an A formation from the natural waist to the floor, highlighting the narrowness of the midsection and floating away from the hips and thighs. (Sturdier fabrics, such as duchesse satin and taffeta, are especially effective, since they won't cling.) A spaghetti-strap bodice or a V neckline will also showcase a more slender upper body.

If You're Busty:

Look for a dress with a scooped neckline. It will open up your face and display your décolletage without showing too much cleavage. If you love the look of strapless gowns, choose one that has a slight dip along the neckline, like a sweetheart, rather than a style that goes straight across (which will make your bust appear even larger and more shelflike).

If You’re Plus-Sized:
Look for an Empire dress with a skirt that begins just under the bust and flows into a gradual floor-length A-line. Make sure the Empire seam does not start on the chest and that there is no pleating of the fabric, which is reminiscent of maternity wear. The dress should play up your shape; if it’s too loose, it will add pounds.

If You’re Apple-Shaped:
Look for a dress that cinches in at the smallest point on the waistline, then flares out into a gradual A shape. Opt for a bodice with a lot of texture to it―think ruche or lace detailing―that will camouflage and fit snugly, creating a corsetlike effect. The most slenderizing neckline for you is one with a deep V, which will draw eyes toward the vertical, not the horizontal.

If You're Tall:

Look for a simple silhouette. The strategy is to emphasize your natural shape, so every aspect of the dress―the lower waistline, a floor-sweeping hem―needs to reflect your longer proportions. If you're wearing long sleeves, they should go past the wrist. You don't want to look as if you've borrowed a gown from someone shorter than you.

"We are putting our wedding workbook to good use. It was a life-saver when Jon and I went to check out venues for our ceremony and for our engagement party. Here’s why ~

I am a bit of a perfectionist. I love organization. Whenever I get too stressed, I begin cleaning and putting things away, getting rid of junk and organizing my desk, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom…nothing is off limits to become orderly. So, being a rather organized person myself, it would seem that I should be all put together, right? Wrong…

When I begin interviews with vendors that I need to make my wedding perfect, I begin to stress and I forget half my questions. Fortunately, the wedding workbook that Jon and I chose has all the questions written down and all I have to do is write the answers in the spaces given on the worksheet. I won’t have to find my note pad(s) later and try to remember where I scribbled all my notes. It’s truly brilliant!

I used the venues worksheets 1st because our whole wedding design depends on our venue. We decided on a country-vintage wedding theme. We’ve also decided to forget the traditional idea of wedding colors. Instead, we are keeping browns and neutrals dominant with splashes of color in flowers and decor. I am wearing pearls with little diamonds for earrings and necklace and we’re encouraging everyone to dress to our theme. I love the idea of a mis-matched vintage-y wedding that is all our own! Before choosing an officiant, have an idea in mind as to the type of ceremony you wish to have:

We recommend choosing an officiant with references! There are plenty of people who officiate weddings, but, how long have they been in business? Do they have access to previous couples who will speak on their behalf? What kind of training do they have? Are there any hidden costs?
